linoleum for engravingLinoleum material suitable for engraving, brown in color with supportive brushed mesh
Characteristic of modern relief printing is the use of alternative materials to wood to make the printing matrices; the most used is linoleum. Made by mixing together linseed oil, cork powder and Greek pitch spread on a jute lattice, linoleum has a smooth, compact surface that can be easily engraved with gouges. The engraving technique is no different than the woodcut and also the appearance of the prints is the same; linoleum is easier to work with than wood, as it has no grain and is relatively plastic; it adapts to a spontaneous and cursive drawing. Patented by F. Walton in 1863, this material was used to make dies for relief printing from the early years of this century. They have engraved on linocuts, among others. Kandinsky and some Expressionists. The ease of engraving on linoleum fascinated Matisse, who used the technique in the simplest terms possible, with a series of prints based on the pure white line on black, while Picasso linked his name to linoleum thanks to the many color prints. engraved between 1958 and 1964. In Italy, especially M. Maccari made extensive use of linoleum. Of particular interest is the evolution of linoleum engraving that developed in Poland after World War II, aimed at analytical research on the constructive elements of graphic language (Grabowski, Starczewski ) together with sometimes surrealist or metaphysical evocations (Gielniak, Fijalkowski). Woodcut and linocut printing: The inking and printing process is identical for both types of engraving: woodcut and linocut. or skin, spread a little typographic ink on the tablet, taking care to distribute it evenly and in such a quantity that it does not overflow from the lines engraved in relief, thus trying not to dirty the whites saved. previously just moistened and adhered by repeatedly rubbing with a bone splint or spoon, being careful not to n move the sheet. Mechanical printing is instead entrusted to an arm-operated screw press (a tool used since the early days of woodblock and letterpress printing) which compresses the paper with planar pressure on the wood.
